SHOW NOTES:
- Comedy bits by Cheech and Chong that we discuss include “Dave’s Not Here”, “Santa Claus & His Old Lady”, “Earache My Eye” (which is performed in a scene in Up In Smoke) and “Basketball Jones featuring Tyrone Shoelaces”.
- We mention some pretty offensive R. Crumb comics but don’t want to link to them.
- Phil references The Pirates of Penzance while confusing The Corsican Brothers for Yellowbeard. The Corsican Brothers is very loosely based on Alexander Dumas’ 1844 novella of the same name.
- The “Born In East LA” music video is fun, and is as relevant today as it was 35 years ago. It has a cameo by Elvira.
- Cheech Marin is, in fact, in Spy Kids.
- Phil thought that Cheech Marin had a Celebrity Jeopardy! record of some kind. It turns out he won a Celebrity Jeopardy! tournament in the 90s but later was beaten by Michael McKean. Mark McGrath never appeared on Celebrity Jeopardy!, but he is a three-time champion on VH1’s Rock & Roll Jeopardy!
- Tommy Chong was convicted in 2003 for drug paraphernalia distribution, and there’s a documentary film about it.
- We discuss the movies Friday and Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, which owe a lot to the films of Cheech and Chong.
- Is there a malted milk coffee drink? Yes here’s one, it’s some kind of iced malted mocha. We’ll try it and let you know.
- The angel from Barbarella, Pygar, is played by the guy who starred in Danger: Diabolik.
