17. Handkerchiefs, The Last Starfighter, Run the Jewels
We add handkerchiefs, The Last Starfighter, and Run the Jewels to the List of Every Damn Thing
Phil and Jake feed the List of Every Damn Thing's never-ending hunger by ranking handkerchiefs, the 1984 sci-fi movie The Last Starfighter, and the rap duo Run the Jewels.

SHOW NOTES:
- At the beginning of the episode we discuss the recent news that California Governor Gavin Newsom attended a party where the state’s COVID-19 guidelines were flouted. We get most of the details right.
- When Jake mentioned neckerchiefs Phil thought he meant ascots. Neckerchiefs are scary because you could hook them on some exposed pipes and be choked out.
- We talk about stories similar to The Last Starfighter. Futureman is a time-travel comedy on Hulu (this trailer for the show includes the scene where they acknowledge The Last Starfighter). We also mention the book & movie Ready Player One, as well as Star Wars. We forget to mention Ender's Game, which is probably the best example of a fantasy about video games being useful.
- We make passing reference to Joseph Campbell and the monomyth, also known as the hero’s journey. It's an age-old narrative template used in The Last Starfighter and all of the similarly-premised stories that we discuss.
- While The Last Starfighter has yet to be remade as a Hollywood movie, it was adapted into an off-Broadway musical.
- Killer Mike has a lot to say and is worth listening to. Here he is giving a speech for the Bernie Sanders campaign. Here's his Netflix show, Killer Mike’s Trigger Warning. Here's a solo song of his about Ronald Reagan (amongst other things).
- When recording the podcast, we weren’t sure how many Run the Jewels albums there are. Jake guessed that the newest one was their fourth record, and he was right.
- Jake is in love with the “Close Your Eyes (And Count to Fuck)” video, which features Lakeith Stanfield (here he is reading questions about himself) and Shea Wigham. If you’re into seeing people joyfully burn money, check out the “Ooh La La” video.
